[ooc: writing sample of a bakerstreet AU verse of Alfred visiting Jason Todd's grave after his death.]

It's always raining in Gotham.

There seems to be a perpetual dark cloud over the city, not to mention the hearts of those who live there. It's a hard city, unforgiving and cruel, a place that seems to breed a very special kind of chaos. It was this chaos that took Jason Todd away from him, chaos made flesh in the form of the Joker, who had beaten the poor boy to death with a crowbar. He had not been there, no one had not even Bruce, and somehow that made it worse.

He shouldn't have been alone, Alfred thinks to himself as he stands in front of Jason's tombstone, his face a mask of perfect grief and his eyes already damp.

He grew up alone, he shouldn't have died that way.

His chest feels tight with sorrow and grief and yet underneath it all is the bright spark anger, anger at the Joker for taking away someone he thought of as a grandson but even more is the anger he feels at Bruce. For not being there in time, for letting this bright and vibrant boy slip away, only to replace him eight weeks later.

Deep down he knew Bruce was grieving, hurting just as he was but the whole thing made Jason seem so bloody expendable that it made Alfred feel sick. He had been a sweet lad, troubled, but all of Bruce's kids were in some way. Even though at first Alfred had thought Jason might be too wild and angry he had eaten his words when the boy had bloomed under Bruce's teaching. Bloomed like a flower in the sun once he had finally been shown some love and acceptance.

But love was a hard thing to keep alive in Gotham, as was hope.

"I won't let it die," He says out loud, feeling the first in a long line of tears for Jason slowly creep down his cheeks only to be washed away in the heavy rain.

"I love you, master Jason. Always will. I just hope, with all my heart, that where you are now....you aren't alone."
