[He stands up to help her get the sweatpants up and over her hips, carefully hugging her back as to not hurt her injured arm.]

You're not too bad yourself there, luv.

[He quips although his tone is warm and sweet.]

All right, let's get you into bed.

[Slowly he guides her over to her bed, pulling the covers back for her and helping her get in.]

See, this is what the puppy face actually got you. I'm letting you help me into bed without complaining.

[Make no mistake, if she had insisted on being treated at the hospital without painkillers, she would be just as insistent right now that she could navigate her way into bed on her own. As it is, she just gives him an amused look as she carefully climbs in and stretches out on her back, wriggling down a bit to try to get into a comfortable position.

Her nose scrunches. Oh yeah. The sling is absolutely not going to last more than one night.]

[He chuckles and once she's found a comfortable position he pulls the covers up, tucking her in tightly.]

Would you like me to read to you for a bit?

Oh God, no.

[Apparently she still has some fight in her, as she promptly uses one arm to excavate herself from that very neat tuck. Her sheet is still draped over her, just more loosely. The look she gives him is aiming for serious, but she's clearly also just on the cusp of laughing.]

You cannot tuck me in and read to me. I don't have enough lingerie to counteract how devastatingly unsexy that would be. How about you get in bed and tell me about your day instead?

[He pulls back to laugh at her reaction.]

Why is that so unsexy?

[Karen pats the other side of the bed as she answers.]

Reading your favorite book to me? Very sexy. Tucking me in? Sweet. Tucking me in and reading me a story while I'm incapacitated? There's no coming back from that.

[This is the foolproof logic of someone riding the waves of pain killers to unconsciousness.]

[Still smiling he lays down on his side next to her, propping his chin up on his hand.]

I beg to differ but all right, no bedtime stories for you.

Instead how about I tell you about the time Daveboy convinced me to steal a limousine so he could impress a bird?

[Though she has concerns about laying even on her good shoulder with the other one in a sling, she does turn her head so she can look over at him. And then smiles at the way he's got his head propped up.]

Oh, I definitely want to hear about that. Any time you mention his name, I know it's going to be good.

Good as in caused a lot of trouble, as he often does. All right, this was back when we were still in training together and one night Daveboy comes creeping over to my bunk and already I could tell he's got some kind of dumb idea...

[It was a dumb idea all right but it does make for a good story and furthermore Alfred is actually a very good storyteller, his tone of voice is rich and soothing and he fleshes out the story with lots of fun details that allow Karen to fully imagine two young boys creeping away from their army training and into London for some fun. It all went tits up of course but by the time Alfred gets to that part she is fast asleep, her head tilted towards him as if she is still listening.]
